PLACES
New York
Of days gone past
When Winnie Denker arrived in the United States, it was the colossal cityscape of New York that fascinated her and she chose to focus on detail, perhaps as a reaction. Commissioned by Life Magazine to go around the entire country in order to publish a book on American culture, Winnie Denker did not attempt to impress. Her photos are simple and moving, while also remaining evocative and respectful. She never risked missing a subject, seeking to go beyond the obvious, in order to act as a dispassionate observer and provide her take on a culture so different from her own.
